Uroplatus Genus
Uroplatus Genus
Uroplatus is a genus of geckos commonly known as leaf-tailed geckos, native to the forests of Madagascar. These remarkable reptiles are renowned for their extraordinary camouflage, mimicking leaves, bark, or twigs to blend seamlessly into their surroundings.
The genus includes a variety of species, each with distinct features such as flat bodies, wide mouths, and fringed skin that help them remain virtually invisible to predators. Uroplatus species are nocturnal and arboreal, relying on their cryptic appearance and stealth to hunt insects at night.
Uroplatus Care
Uroplatus Care
Habitat:
- Enclosure: Provide a tall, well-ventilated terrarium with plenty of vertical space and hiding spots. A 12x12x18-inch, front opening enclosure is good for a single adult, but bigger is always better. Bioactives are the ideal for this species
- Substrate: Our ABG mix is the best option, however, ReptiSoil with leaf litter over it will also work.
Temperature and Humidity:
- Temperature: Maintain a temperature gradient between 70-80°F (21-27°C) with a cooler side for thermoregulation. Temperatures higher than 80°F(27°C) can be lethal to some species.
- Humidity: Keep humidity levels between 50-80% depending on the species. Mist the enclosure at night or in the evenings to provide additional water for them to drink.
Lighting:
- Provide a low-intensity light cycle to simulate natural conditions, with 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. We recommend using a low-wattage UVB bulb. If not, it's best to supplement their diet with vitamin D3.
Diet:
- Offer a diet of gut-loaded crickets, roaches, and other small insects. Provide adequate multivitamin and calcium supplements as needed.
Behavior and Handling:
- Uroplatus geckos are shy and prefer minimal handling. They are best admired from a distance to reduce stress. Ensure plenty of hiding spots to help them feel secure.
Maintenance:
- Clean the enclosure regularly, removing any waste and uneaten food to prevent mold and bacteria growth.
