Nephrurus Genus
Nephrurus Genus
Nephrurus is a genus of geckos native to Australia, commonly known as knob-tail geckos due to their distinctive, bulbous tails. These geckos are well-adapted to arid and semi-arid environments, with robust bodies and a variety of color patterns that provide excellent camouflage against their desert surroundings.
Notable for their unique defensive behavior, Nephrurus species often use their tails as a diversionary tactic to confuse predators. They are primarily nocturnal and terrestrial, relying on their keen sense of smell to locate food and navigate their habitat.

Habitat:
- Enclosure: Provide a spacious terrarium with a secure lid, ideally 20-30 gallons for adults. Include a mix of hides, climbing structures, and ground space to mimic their natural arid or semi-arid habitat.
- Substrate: Use sand or a mix of sand and ReptiSoil.
Temperature and Humidity:
- Temperature: Maintain a temperature gradient with a basking area around 90-100°F (32-38°C) and a cooler side around 70-80°F (21-27°C). Use a heat mat or overhead heat source to create this gradient.
- Humidity: Keep humidity low, around 30-40%, to replicate their natural dry conditions. Use a hygrometer to monitor and adjust as needed.
Lighting:
- Provide a light cycle of 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness to simulate natural day/night cycles. UVB lighting is not essential but can be beneficial for overall health.
Diet:
- Feed a variety of appropriately sized insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Provide adequate multivitamin and calcium supplements as needed.
Behavior and Handling:
- Nephrurus geckos can be shy and may prefer minimal handling. Provide ample hiding spots and avoid excessive handling to reduce stress.
Maintenance:
- Clean the enclosure regularly by removing waste and uneaten food. Replace substrate as needed to maintain a hygienic environment.
