Bring a truly extraordinary botanical curiosity into your collection with the Hoya Mitrata Splash Mother Plant. Native to Southeast Asia, Hoya mitrata is famous for its unique growth habit and thick, deeply textured, puckered foliage. This rare 'Splash' cultivar elevates the species with heavy overlays of bright metallic silver speckling scattered across its deep green leaves.

Offered as a mature Mother Plant, this specimen arrives with an extensive, fully established root system and thick, well-lignified vines loaded with active growth nodes. It forms an impressive architectural display when growing up a trellis—where it can form its signature domed "nest" foliage—and serves as a high-yielding, premium stock plant for taking healthy propagation cuttings.

Key Features & Highlights

  • Textured Silver Foliage: Thick, corrugated leaves with heavy silver splash flecking and prominent structural veins.

  • Collector-Grade Mother Specimen: Fully rooted with multiple active growth points and mature stems—skipping the slow unrooted establishment phase.

  • Exotic Floral Umbels: Capable of producing large, spectacular clusters of recurved creamy-yellow flowers with dark coronas that release a rich floral scent.

  • Architectural Growth Habit: Natural myrmecophilous (ant-plant) species that forms striking clustered leaf domes as it matures.

Care Guide & Growing Conditions

Parameter Recommended Care
Light Bright, indirect light; strong indirect lighting maximizes silver splash expression and encourages blooming.
Watering Allow the potting medium to dry out 60–70% between waterings to safeguard root health.
Soil Mix Extra chunky, fast-draining epiphytic mix (coarse orchid bark, pumice, perlite, and charcoal).
Humidity Thrives in 50–70% relative humidity; appreciates warm, humid growing environments.
Temperature Tropical warm-grower; prefers indoor temperatures between 68°F and 85°F (20°C to 29°C). Keep protected strictly from cold drafts.

Hoya Genus

The Hoya genus, encompassing over 500 species, is a diverse and fascinating group of tropical plants within the Apocynaceae family. Native to various regions across Asia, Australia, and the Pacific islands, Hoyas are predominantly evergreen perennial creepers or vines, though some species can also grow as shrubs. They often grow epiphytically on trees, using adventitious roots to climb, but can also be found growing terrestrially or in rocky areas.

Hoya plants are characterized by their simple, succulent leaves arranged in an opposite pattern, which vary greatly in size, texture, color, and venation.

One of the most striking features of Hoya plants is their flowers, which are typically star-shaped and waxy, appearing in clusters. Flower colors range widely from white and pink to yellow, orange, dark red, near-black, and even green, often accompanied by a sweet fragrance and abundant nectar production.

Hoya Care

Hoyas do best in bright, indirect light and well-draining soil, such as a mix designed for orchids or cacti. They prefer to be slightly root-bound, so repot only when absolutely necessary to avoid excess moisture, which can lead to root rot. Water sparingly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings, and ensure good air circulation around the plant. Hoyas are generally resistant to pests but keep an eye out for mealybugs, which may appear on the undersides of leaves or along stems.
